Over the course of two decades, 100 small farmer cooperatives in South India have benefited from successful social and economic interventions, which have evolved into a rural farming model based on local resources and traditional skills to improve livelihood. Small and marginal rain-fed farmers' efforts to engage in default organic agriculture have resulted in increased organic farming and the linking of their cotton to mainstream markets.
