In a world of mass production, bringing a piece of TerraKlay woodenware into your home is an act of intention. These pieces are not merely objects; they are living artifacts of the artisan process. To ensure these treasures remain functional and beautiful heirlooms for generations, they require a rhythm of care that honors the natural materials from which they are hewn.
The cleaning process should always be gentle, respecting the wood’s natural character.
Hand Wash Only: Always hand wash your woodenware with warm water and mild dish soap.
Avoid Machines: Never place wooden items in the dishwasher, microwave, or oven, as the extreme heat and moisture will cause the wood to warp or crack.
Do Not Soak: Wash promptly without soaking to prevent water absorption, which can damage the wood's structure.
Proper Drying: After washing, dry the piece immediately with a clean cloth. Allow it to air dry completely for an hour or two before storing. Ideally, place boards in a drying rack so air can reach both sides; storing damp boards directly on a countertop can trap moisture and lead to warping.
Wood breathes and responds to its environment. To maintain its luster, you must nourish it.
The Right Oil: We recommend using food-quality mineral oil or a refined walnut wood oil.
What to Avoid: Never use vegetable or olive oils, as these can go rancid and encourage bacteria growth over time.
Routine: For the first few months, season the wood weekly. Afterward, recondition every six months or whenever the wood looks dull or feels rough.
Application: Apply the oil liberally, let it soak in for 15-30 minutes, and wipe away any excess with a soft cotton cloth.
Over time, a well-loved bowl may show signs of service. These are not flaws, but opportunities for renewal.
Smoothing Texture: If the wood becomes "fuzzy" or dented, use fine steel wool (No. 0000) or 400-600 grit sandpaper. Gently sand in the direction of the grain until smooth, then wash, dry, and season.
Natural Sanitizing: For a deeper clean without harsh chemicals, use a solution of one part white vinegar to five parts water (or a 50-50 mix). Spray, rinse, and air dry.
Stain Awareness: Be mindful that highly pigmented foods, such as strawberries or beets, may stain lighter woods like cherry.
Our handcrafted bowls are created with the utmost care. However, they require your partnership to survive. Please note that TerraKlay cannot assume responsibility for damage resulting from improper use, such as dishwasher cleaning. By following these guidelines, you ensure the full lifespan of your handcrafted bowl, allowing it to age gracefully alongside your home.
